The Stranger
I get on the bus at midnight there is a strange mist outside the bus. The bus is completely empty. The bus comes to a halt to let a stranger on, he stares straight at me and grins at me creepily. He sits directly in front of me with his suitcase, he doesn’t let go of it, he is holding the zip shut. When he gets off the bus I notice that he’s left his suitcase behind and strange noises are coming from inside, then the zip slowly starts to open.

Here is our first short story competition winner by Jonathan White
Jack was playing in the garden with a football. The sun was shining and the breeze was gentle. He counted out 5 steps from the ball. He stopped and stared at his target, the top corner of the garden fence. He ran towards the ball and kicked. The thud was met with a smash. Much to Jack's horror, the ball had missed his target and unfortunately Mr. Parker's shed window was no match for his shot.
Jack ran round to the front of Mr. Parker’s house, his stomach in a knot. He knocked on the door and waited for the reply but the reply never came. But then he thought, this was good, he would run round the house, grab the ball before anyone found out that he smashed the window. No one would know, so they wouldn’t mind- would they?
Jack rushed round the side of the old house and quickly opened the rusted shed door. It was dingy inside which was strange considering the number of windows.
In a flash the wind felt colder and the sky grew cloudy, making the shed darker, still. Jack flicked the light switch, it made a buzzing noise when it came on, then turned off again. That was when he heard it, it sounded like someone taking a deep breath. It gave jack goose bumps. Jack's ball was near the end of the shed. As Jack walked slowly towards the ball, he noticed the strangeness of the shed; it was scatted with diagrams and pictures of people and gun targets. But then there was the knifes, they were splattered with entrails and red spots- red spots of blood!
Jack walked faster and picked up the ball- then stopped, scared stiff. There was a gun, but the gun wasn't what scared him, there was a hand holding the gun; it was as white as snow. It was dead... it must be dead... is it dead? But then it moved.

Characters
Skeleton dog called Geoff, (not Jeff)
Magical squirrel called Simmons
Evil Mushroom called Marvin.
Summary
Geoff and Simmons need the “sceptre of Applecon” to stop Marvin summoning the badgers of doom using the last flying squirrel.
Story
The first thing Simmons did whenever he woke up was to call the nut shop and, surprisingly, order some nuts. The second thing he did whenever he woke up was throw Geoff (not Jeff) his skeleton dog a bone. Simmons saved lots of money on ones because Geoff was indeed a skeleton dog. This meant that all Simmons had to do was take off Geoff’s tail, throw it and re- attach it. While Simmons was gladly nibbling away on his acorn and Geoff was trying to eat his own tail, a scared looking beaver ran into the tree, fell, and walked through the door.
“Simmons! Simmons! Geoff!” he called.
“Yes?” answered Simmons,
“Ruff?” barked Geoff.
“It’s Marvin the evil Mushroom! He’s back; he stole the Gratem, kidnapped the last flying squirrel, and is finding the perfect place to summon the badgers!” After this long sentence, he passed out.
After he started to breathe the voice of another squirrel said
“We’re all doomed! The only bad guy with common sense is attacking! We are all doomed!”
“Well Geoff, we should get the sceptre of Applecorn”
As he said this, he ran towards the sanctuary of squirrels.
The squirrels at the sanctuary were actually quite friendly about it. All Simmons had to do was sneak past all the guards, steal a uniform, knock out some more guards and steal the sceptre. Very friendly indeed. Now all he needed to do was track down an evil mushroom and stop the end of the world.
The first thing Simmons had to do was to find a talented (and friendly) sensitive who could find the link between worlds. Thankfully he once bought a sensitive a Big Mac.
When the rusty door screeched open an elderly snail slid through.
“Simmons” he gasped.
“Hello Jebidiah” replied Simmons without enthusiasm.
“What can I do? That burger was delicious by the way!”
Simmons revealed the sceptre, and a look of dread appeared on the snail’s face.
Since Geoff could also talk, he asked Simmons where they were going.
“We’re going to the abandoned hospital, by the church”
“Why?”
“Because an evil mushroom called Marvin lives. All we need to do is kill the badgers that come through.”
The hospital was already eerie enough without evil super badgers prancing around.
“Marvin!” echoed Simmons
“Yes?” came a squeaky voice from behind.
“Greetings psychopathic mushroom old chum! I see you’ve summoned some badgers?”
Marvin did certainly have two rabid looking striped, muscle badgers either side of him.
“Yes, well I hope these two said goodbye” grinned Simmons quickly whipping out the sceptre.
“Whoa, let’s not get too hasty here....”Marvin was cut off. Probably because of the badger snapping his neck.

Our Third winning story
Why Me?
By Phoebe Sowden
Hello world. I’m Megan Miller, and guess what I have to do for the next two days? Give up? Well I have to look after my annoying little brother Max, who has broken his leg. I don’t think I can cope for two whole days. Fetching drinks, washing clothes, ironing his pants isn’t what I’m cut out for. I should be performing my songs at Wembley Arena showing what I can really do, but at the minute all I can do is make a very good ham and mustard sandwich. (With a slight hint of Ketchup)
“Megan can I have a milkshake with whipped cream, marshmallows and sprinkles?” said Max.
“No get one yourself!” I shouted back. The n mum came in and said “Megan, you know your brother can’t, be a love and get him a drink.” I can’t believe mum has taken his side. I bet he broke his leg on purpose so I would be his slave. Then mum came back and poked her head round the door and said
“Also I will need you to take care of Max for two days because I have a night shift at the care home.” I think you can guess what came next from me but if you don’t then I shall tell you, “Noooooooooooooooooooo!”
So now instead of hanging out with my friends I have to wash my brother’s bedding and instead of updating my Facebook I have to read Max bedtime stories. (He is twelve; you don’t need bedtime stories at twelve!) After two days mum knocked at the door and it was the happiest day of my life. Freedom at last, no more being a slave!
Six weeks later I have finished school for the summer. My phone was ringing so I ran into the kitchen, tripped over a chair and broke my arm. So now I have to do nothing for the whole of the summer but there is one good thing that comes out from this. Max is in charge of all my washing until I get better. So life goes on for the Miller household.

The Girl Under the Bed
By Ellie Whitcombe
Joe was in his bed. It was 10 P.M and he was exhausted. He had been out at the park all evening with his mates and he’d had a right laugh. They’d each told a story and one was about a girl who stared at you at night. If you woke up between 2 -3 A.M she would attack.
Suddenly, Joe heard something, or someone, move. Slowly he climbed out of bed and looked around his bedroom. Something twitched underneath his bed. Joe crept towards the bed and in one sharp movement, poked his head underneath. Nothing.
It was 2.45 A.M. Joe was in a deep sleep. A girl was sat at his desk with the lamp on. Her bloodshot eyes were fixated on Joe. Someone began walking up the stairs. They saw that Joe’s lamp was on and said “Joe?”
The girl quickly turned off the lamp and dived under the bed. Not once did she take her eyes off Joe.
Joe’s mother opened the door. When she saw that Joe was fast asleep with the lamp off, she muttered, “Must’ve been a trick of the light” and walked out. The girl stayed hidden under the bed, staring at the mattress. The time was 2.49 A.M. Joe awoke and felt the same sensation he had experienced earlier. Without getting out Joe hung his head over the edge of the bed and looked underneath. A girl with bloodshot eyes was stretching out a grimy clawed hand towards him........

The Tree House and The Man
By Mollie Aksoy-Weeks
Iris Butler was 14 years old when it happened.
It was Wednesday 11th March 1998 and Iris Butler was walking home from school with her two friends, Midnight and Dawn. They were organising a sleepover at Midnight’s house because she had the biggest bedroom. They had been planning it for ages but today was the day that it became official. They had planned all the sweets and where they were all going to sleep. They thought it was going to be amazing, but they were wrong.
Iris had one doubt about this sleepover; she had to walk past the killer tree house, well that is what everyone called it. It is said that a 75 year old man was shot in there during WW1 and has haunted it ever since. People say he wears a navy blue pinstripe suit and round glasses. They also say he has white hair and stares at you through the window.
It was now Thursday 12th 21:00 and Iris was lying in bed trying to think of a shortcut but there was none. She fell into a deep sleep and started dreaming that she had a new Golden Retriever but then she saw him in her dream. She couldn’t hear him speak but she could read his lips, he said
“You’re next”
She woke up horrified
The morning had come, Friday 13th March 1998 and Iris was dresses and almost ready to go. All she had to do was get her shoes. She ran upstairs and saw him again, this time she was awake. She was just choosing her tartan Converse boots when she turned to the door and saw him.
Again she couldn’t hear him but this time he mouthed the word “Soon”
She was finally completely ready, it was 8.00pm and she had to go, she was trying to stall to get a lift but her mum was babysitting today. She had now left the house. It was really dark, so dark she could barely see her arm. Now she was at the tree house. She looked up expecting and hoping to see nothing but again, there he was. Him.
She blinked but when she opened her eyes she was in the tree house. Not only was she in the tree house but she saw the man walking away into the distance.

Why Baboons Have Red Bums
By Charlotte yr 8
Baboon was stubborn. Even more stubborn than your mum on one of her bad days. He said horrid things to the other animals and creatures. For example, the other week, he said to peacock his feathers were the ugliest things he had ever seen. Peacock waddled off, as he does, when he is in a strop. He said to lion that he shouldn’t be king; he is still not a grown cat, in fact. Lion just stood up, and walked off, half roaring, half crying as he went Baboon just swung though the trees, laughing as he went. He was so horrid!
One scorching hot day, I was out walking, when I saw baboon, sweating like mad, he was sweating sooooo much, it looked like it had just rained heavily, just over him. Because I didn’t want to be seen, I quickly scampered behind the biggest tree. The biggest tree I have ever seen. Surprisingly, he walked straight past me. Then he noticed something not quite right. He looked behind himself, and in front, to the left, then straight at me. I stood still, my arms out like a tree. He squinted his eyes at me, he took a few paces forward, and then passed me. I stayed still, luckily, so baboon just wandered off. I had to snigger. Have you guessed what I saw?
On that same day baboon had passed elephant, flamingo, lion, peacock, tiger, snake and parrot and they all sniggered as well. Baboon came over to me. My knees were knocking, my teeth chattering, and then baboon burst out crying!
"What’s the matter I asked?"
"Everyone’s laughing at me monkey!" he sobbed "Do you know why you dummy?"
"I do" I said.
"Well tell me"
"Only if you promise not to be mean to anyone ever again!"
"I don’t think I can commit to that" he complained.
I looked at him then he promised. I was quite shocked that he said yes. (I would write down what he said but there were a few rude words)I then explained to him what I had seen as he walked past me.
"Ahhh" he screamed. We all laughed. He ran away crying. Baboon had a red bum!!!!
So that is why baboon got a red bum. He was out in the sun too long and got sunburned. So readers the moral of the story is never go outside with a bare bum, or you may turn into a baboon!

The Bauble that Hated Christmas
By Emily
Urgh!
Christmas the worst day of the year. Here they come running downstairs like a herd of elephants. Oh here they come running into the room carrying their scruffy stockings, look at the presents down there begging to be opened. Why?! Why did I get put up upon the tree? Why could it not have been Jack of Danny, they would make a good decoration?
How dare the new toys try to make a good impression. Oh, now look who it is, Candy the candy cane. She acts so sweet to everyone including me. You do not want to talk to Candy, seriously, she drives me sparkles. Once she tried to share my branch with me for the whole time the tree was up. It was a terrible time.
Now I am not here to celebrate Christmas I am here to tell you my story. It was two weeks before Christmas in the year 2008. I was the first one. They picked me because of my spikes. At first they thought I was a colourful snowflake, but a few days after I came home the little one, Olivia, (but I like to call her Livvy) tripped over a teddy and fell into the Christmas tree. I was in her arm which made her cry so much.
So I was put at the back of the tree, which was the worst place to be put. The back of the tree was where the cat slept. I remember making nasty comments and insulting the cat, which made him jump up the tree and try to knock me down. But I held on tight enough.
After that I traded places with James the snowman. He had a rough week. Anyway I was a very happy bauble, until Cindy the candy cane joined our tree. She was so nice I have to admit I liked her at first but on Christmas day she got nasty with all of us. When all the parents and children went to sleep and even after Santa came she mixed up all the presents.
Then after she left our tree her cousin Candy came along, that is where I started to hate her family. She came out of the box smiling with delight. I was the first person she talked to.
“Hello I’m Candy, who are you?” she asked.
“I am Mr Bauble and if you don’t mind I want to be alone.” I said I didn’t want to talk to her after what her cousin did.
“Well Mr Bauble, you shouldn’t be grumpy at Christmas, it is time to see children open their toys and see the smiles on their faces” said Candy putting on a big smile.
“Well I don’t like seeing children smile after what happened to me on the first day of me coming to the tree” I said trying to roll away.
“Well Mr Bauble the children can’t have a bauble on the tree that honestly hated Christmas “said Candy, sounding quite annoyed.
“Well this is why I am going back to my place and not being disturbed. I do hope you don’t intend to do what your cousin Cindy did that one Christmas night, now goodbye miss Cane”
I stormed away from her but she never left the tree.
Now whenever I see Candy I always nod, I don’t smile, I don’t see why I should.
Anyway that is my story and I am proud to say I am the bauble that hated Christmas!

One Month to Live
By Phoebe Yr 8
I sat there with tears running down my cheek. I had remembered the time when my Mum and I sat at this mirror and she was telling me how beautiful I looked in my Prom dress. I remember all sorts of things about her, like the time she gave me a necklace and told me to keep it near my heart. At that point I didn’t know she only had one month to live, but she knew. I forgave her for not telling me, I would have done the same. As I stopped my thoughts of the past from entering my present, I noticed a keyhole in the mirror’s brown frame. I wondered what it was for.
Then, next to the lace of my nightdress I noticed a strange glow. As I slowly reached to pick up the glowing object an image appeared in the mirror of a bright and happy land. It seemed a place where nothing at all could ever possibly go wrong. As I picked up the glowing object I felt a burning pain and instinctively touched my back...... Wings.
I held the object as it stopped glowing and started to form into a key. I tried it in the lock on the mirror and it turned. I was sucked into a portal. I was going to that land.
I must have been knocked out for at least two hours. As I got up I saw a beautiful field of long, fresh green grass. There were vines and curly flowers and bright colourful mushrooms. When I looked closely at them I saw windows and doors, there was also a castle made of rock. They were filled with happy looking people. In the distance I saw a woman with golden hair facing away from me. I thought it must be Mum and I ran towards her, my heart pounding. I placed my hand on her shoulders and found it wasn’t Mum, it was Nana.
I asked Nana where Mum was and she said
"Look behind you"
I looked and saw my Mum and the rest of the family crying and waving goodbye to me.
I now realise it was me that only had one month to live and Mum knew but didn’t tell me. I forgave her. I looked at Nana and she pointed at my wings and said
"You are now free from pain and you have the key to heaven"

Fallen Angel
By Cody Yr 8
Angel sat in front of the gothic mirror as a pearly tear slid down her face. Beside her lay an old bronze key. In the mirror her wings fluttered feebly. She picked up the key and walked towards the forest. She had to say goodbye........before she died.
She knew she was going to die that’s the way it worked. An Angel could earn a year on Earth, a year of being alive. Then you died. But she had been stupid. She had fallen in love with a human. Now she was a fallen Angel. Fallen in love.
There in the woods he stood, poor and perfect. The woods around him glowed of lush shades of green. Mushrooms only two foot high spilled light from their miniature windows. Across the clearing stood a jagged castle. The clearing was paved in grey stone in the centre was a shape of a sun. Leading away from this were three steps. It was at the top of these that he stood.
Slowly Angel walked towards him, tears streaming down her face. As she reached him she whispered "I’m so, so sorry."
"What for?" he asked, slightly confused.
"For falling in love with you."
He swooped down and picked a red rose, handing it to her he said
"For my true love"
Angel could feel her wings coming through. In amazement he stared at the beautiful being in front of him.
"So, so sorry "She whispered as their eyes met. Her body started to collapse in a slow and graceful way. She mouthed "I love you"
She then curled up in the centre of the clearing, exactly on the sun shape. Slowly her body began to glow. All the colour from her body seemed to gather above her forming a silver ball. At last all that was left was a feather from her wing, the silver ball and her red rose.
The silver ball flew away into the night sky and became a star, forever watching over her true love.
